Bullet History of Kaziranga National Park
Lady Curzon on a visit to kaziranga, was taken aback when the mahout with whom she was on safari told that the British officers came to the forest for hunting the one-horned rhino. Lady Curzon on her return to Calcutta, expressed deep concern over this subject with her husband-Lord Curzon-Viceroy of India at that time. Finally Lord Curzon had to issue orders that would prohibit the hunting of rhinos in Assam.

On 1st June 1905, Kaziranga was declared as a proposed reserve forest and in 1908 established as a reserve forest. In 1926 hunting was banned in kaziranga and in 1974 was declared as a National Park.
Kaziranga National Park also saw some major milestones that were taken to save the flora & fauna in particular and the park in general. It was in the year 1985 that UNESCO declared kaziranga national park as a World Heritage Site. More recently, kaziranga celebrated its centenary (1905-2005).

Kaziranga has slowly but steadily got on its feet once again, thanks to the numerous foresters and field officers who have dedicated their lives in protecting the animals. The role of national & international organisations cannot be overlooked. The Assam Forest Department and Wildlife Trust of India along with International Fund for Animal Welfare have set up rehabilitations centres for distressed animals.
